Capitan Mountain 34 Hour Endurance Run

In the shadow of where a badly burned bear cub named Hotfoot was found by firefighters in 1950 — and became Smokey Bear — you’ll run 34 hours of soft, looped mountain trail in Capitan, New Mexico.

Four-mile loops. A central aid station. A food truck with lunch, dinner, and midnight snacks for the ones still out there. Pacers allowed after midnight.

Not ready for 34 hours? The Hotfoot Teddy 12-Hour runs Friday dawn to dusk. The Rabbit 6-Hour starts Saturday morning. Every distance from 25K up counts — no DNFs here.

The Smokey Connection

In 1950, a badly burned black bear cub named “Hotfoot” was found by firefighters in Lincoln National Forest. This brave little survivor became Smokey Bear, America’s wildfire prevention icon. So popular he had his own ZIP code, Smokey lived at the National Zoo until 1976, when he returned home to rest beneath a tree in Capitan that grows stronger with his legacy.

Now, you can run where Smokey’s story began, adding your own tale of endurance to these historic grounds.
