Watch Jason Run H9.

Hi, I’m Jason Green.

Country music and myself were both born in Bristol. I found  trail running at 12 years old and spent many days exploring the Appalachian mountains. Running was just a means to see more of the mountains that nestled my hometown. Then at 16, I started whitewater boating the creeks and rivers that cut thru western North Carolina and East Tennessee. As a kid my parents would drop me off on the Appalachian trail in VA and return to pick me up 40+ miles away. In fact this is how the Yeti 100 race course was born.

Skating, boating, and running

In my teens and into my 20s, I chased my dreams and pursued happiness in whitewater boating and skateboarding. He traveled the country running big rivers and steep creeks. On the bank of a river out west someone gave him a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. As has with all passions , they tug at your soul until you get up and do something about it. Beer became a passion. Jason packed up and moved to Atlanta to help a fledgling alcohol distributor grow and promote family owned breweries and distilleries.

The Spark

During my time in the booze biz I had picked up a pack a day habit of smoking cigarettes. At a general check up at the doctors office, I was scanning the magazines and stumbled on a article about someone running 50 miles in the woods. Like all great things, it awoke that passion set aside so many years ago.

The Desire

The doctor finally came in to see me. I asked. ‘Do you think I can run 50 miles ? How do you quit smoking?’. The doctor said, “if you wanna stop smoking, just stop. As for running 50 miles, it would take a dedicated athlete to do such a feat.” On the way home I stopped bought a pair of running shorts and shoes, changed into them and took off out the door. Everything came to a screeching halt as I bent over, dry heaving from exhaustion. The next day, I made it a mile before I was walking home with my head down.

The Knowledge

Eventually I made it to 10 miles. One day on a walk back from the woods – a chance meeting with now great friend David Milner happened. David ran ultras. David helped me learn to pace, how to approach trails, and how to fuel. Under his tutelage, I was able to run 50 miles 11 months after quitting smoking in a time of 10:45;33. I continued to run a few 50ks but noticed the races didn’t have a vibe I liked, like skateboarding contest and whitewater contests. I didn’t want to continue racing in the sterile environment.

How The Yeti Trail Runners Got Started

Yeti Trail Runners was created to see if other folks were out there just like him. He decided to host a race in his backyard. After the first race he hosted, he spent some time writing down what he wanted to achieve with the Yeti Trail Runners. Important to him was; giving back, being inclusive and welcoming to all no matter age, sex, gender, ability. No boxes for 1st place to stand over everyone but a community that gained satisfaction in the success of others.

Jason continues to run ultra races and has now ran over 100 ultramarathons and still claims he hasn’t learned a damn thing on how to run them and still makes sure that the Yetis are open and available to all. He even puts is mobile number on the bottom of every email as he believes in knowing every single Yeti when they reach the finish line of a yeti race
